COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Artist Designer: Maker degree is structured over three years to develop students’ creative, technical, and professional skills. In the first year, students begin with the Groundings and Individual Project modules, exploring materials, processes, and equipment across ceramics, wood, metal, glass, and digital fabrication, while gaining an understanding of key concepts in art and design practice. Research Basics develops academic research skills, and Interdisciplinary Understanding encourages collaborative work, critical thinking, and reflection through projects addressing societal and cultural themes. In the second year, the Create module challenges students to experiment with materials, processes, and new technologies, including 3D printing, laser cutting, and Arduino, while reflecting on personal strengths and interests through seminars and peer critiques. The 21st Century Challenges module builds on interdisciplinary problem-solving and leadership skills through real-world projects, and Real-World Contexts provides opportunities to apply practice in professional and community settings. The Research Proposal strengthens research abilities and prepares students for independent enquiry in their final year. In the third year, Making a Maker supports advanced creative practice, allowing students to focus on professional development, competitions, or self-directed projects. Positioning in Practice encourages reflection on career readiness, while Contribution enables students to demonstrate research, analysis, and practical skills in a final body of work, preparing them for careers, further study, or entrepreneurial ventures.
