COURSE CURRICULUM
The Politics and International Relations degree at Canterbury Christ Church University offers a broad and critical understanding of political systems, justice, inequality, and global change. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of political thought and contemporary global challenges through core modules such as power, politics and the state, freedom, justice and rebellion, unequal worlds, and how to change the world. These are supported by student success modules which help build essential academic skills. In the second year, the course takes a more applied and interdisciplinary direction. The industry, careers and enterprise module helps students understand the professional landscape and develop skills for future employment. Interdisciplinary modules offer perspectives from other academic fields to enrich political understanding. Key modules include conflict, justice and exploitation, which explores the roots and consequences of conflict and oppression, and transnational security: global responses, which examines international cooperation in addressing security threats. The third year focuses on independent research and real-world application. Students undertake research in practice and a final specialist project, allowing them to explore a topic of personal or professional interest. Core modules such as sustainability, justice and exclusion, and sustainability, security and territory address contemporary political issues related to environmental challenges, social justice, and international governance. A variety of optional modules are available, including miscarriages of justice, mental health and trauma, demystifying “true” crime, knowledge in practice, and culture, identity and digital self. These allow students to tailor their learning to specific areas of interest, connecting political theory with social and cultural realities.Overall, the degree equips students with a deep understanding of political processes and issues, critical thinking skills, and practical experience. Graduates are prepared for careers in public service, international development, policy, advocacy, and other roles that require analytical and ethical engagement with global challenges.
