COURSE CURRICULUM

The Paramedic Science degree at Canterbury Christ Church University is structured to provide a strong academic and practical foundation for students aspiring to become registered paramedics. In Year 1, students focus on essential knowledge and skills needed for healthcare practice. Modules such as Academic Skills and Human Science introduce the principles of academic study and the human body’s structure and function. Developing Ambulance Practice and Understanding Systems, Team Working and Core Skills in Healthcare emphasize collaboration, communication, and foundational paramedic competencies. The Clinical Practice Module, worth 40 credits, allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings early in the course.In Year 2, the curriculum advances into more complex areas of paramedic practice. Evidence Based and Sustainable Practice introduces students to research methods and the importance of using evidence to inform care. Lower Acuity Care and High Acuity Care focus on the management of both non-urgent and critical emergencies, helping students build clinical decision-making skills across various patient presentations. Law & Ethics for Paramedics explores the legal and moral responsibilities involved in delivering safe and accountable care. The second Clinical Practice Module provides further hands-on experience in diverse healthcare environments, strengthening students’ clinical confidence and competence.Year 3 prepares students for autonomous professional practice and leadership roles. Quality Improvement and Leadership in Health and Care examines strategies for improving service delivery and promoting effective team leadership. Specialist Paramedic Practice and Consolidating Paramedic Practice develop expertise in advanced clinical areas and prepare students for transition into the workforce. The final Practice Module allows for extended clinical placements where students demonstrate their readiness for professional registration. Throughout the program, practical learning is reinforced with academic support and guidance from experienced healthcare professionals. Upon graduation, students are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as qualified paramedics.
