COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) degree at Canterbury Christ Church University combines rigorous academic study with extensive practical experience to prepare students for a career as professional mental health nurses. In the first year, students undertake foundational modules including professional nursing practice, nursing for health, and nursing practice 1, supported by student success modules to build essential academic and practical skills. This year focuses on developing competence in core nursing principles, person-centred care, and professional conduct, reinforced through practical placements. In the second year, the course advances into mental health specialisms, with modules on assessing needs and planning care in mental health nursing, therapeutic interventions, and continued nursing practice 2, alongside a module exploring social justice in nursing and midwifery practice. These modules enable students to develop clinical reasoning, empathy, and the ability to respond effectively to complex mental health challenges. In the third year, students consolidate their expertise through modules in complex care in mental health nursing, nursing practice 3, and exploring quality improvement in practice. This combination of academic learning and hands-on clinical experience equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to deliver high-quality, safe, and compassionate mental health care, preparing them for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and successful careers in a variety of healthcare settings.
