COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery degree at Canterbury Christ Church University provides a comprehensive pathway to becoming a skilled and professional midwife, combining theoretical learning with extensive clinical practice. In the first year, students focus on transitioning into higher education, developing digital literacy, and understanding the professional role of a midwife. Core modules cover midwifery, wellbeing, and society, universal care principles, and participation in practice, with optional modules that encourage critical thinking, leadership, and the ability to evaluate information effectively. This stage emphasizes evidence-based practice, advanced clinical reasoning, and decision-making under complex scenarios. The final year focuses on professional autonomy and leadership, preparing students for independent practice. Core modules cover demonstrating proficiency in practice, autonomous midwifery practice, leadership, excellence and advocacy, and exploring quality improvement in practice. Throughout the course, students gain hands-on experience in hospitals and community settings, learning directly from experienced midwives, developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, and ensuring graduates are fully prepared to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care as qualified midwives.
