COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Forensic Investigation with Criminal Investigation degree is structured over three years to provide students with a combination of scientific, analytical, and investigative skills essential for careers in criminal justice and forensic practice. In Year 1, students establish a foundation through modules such as Introduction to Forensic Investigation, The Criminal Justice System, Investigative Interviewing, Introduction to Crime Scene Investigation, and Student Success modules. These modules develop understanding of investigative processes, evidence collection, interviewing techniques, and the legal and ethical frameworks governing criminal justice. Year 2 focuses on applied and interdisciplinary learning, with modules including Industry, Careers and Enterprise, Criminal Investigation: Process and Decision Making, Forensic Investigation of Serious Crime, and additional interdisciplinary modules. Students gain hands-on experience in analysing serious crimes, applying forensic techniques, and understanding the wider context of criminal investigations, while engaging with industry practices. Year 3 advances students’ expertise with modules such as Research in Practice, Evidence Relating to Criminal Investigation, Complex and Major Crime Investigation, and the Forensic Investigation Specialist Project, allowing for independent research and practical application of skills. Optional modules, including Fire and Explosion Scene Investigation, Miscarriages of Justice, and Forensic Specialists in Death Investigations, provide opportunities for specialisation. Graduates leave the program equipped to pursue careers in policing, forensic science, criminal investigation, or related fields, with strong analytical, practical, and professional skills suited to real-world challenges.
