COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Criminal Investigation degree is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of investigative practices, criminal justice processes, and the skills required to work in policing and related fields. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as The Criminal Justice System, Investigative Interviewing, Introduction to Crime Scene Investigation, and Succeeding in Your Criminal Justice Specialism, supported by Student Success modules that enhance academic and professional skills. Year 2 focuses on developing applied expertise with modules including Criminal Investigation: Process and Decision Making, Investigating Major and Complex Crime, Interdisciplinary modules, and Industry, Careers and Enterprise, allowing students to engage with real-world investigative scenarios and professional practice. In Year 3, students deepen their understanding through modules such as Miscarriages of Justice, Evidence Relating to Criminal Investigation, Dissertation in Policing, and Investigating Serious Sexual Offences and Domestic Abuse, while optional modules such as Research in Practice, Forensic Specialist in Death Investigations, Demystifying True Crime, Knowledge in Practice, and Mental Health and Trauma provide opportunities to tailor the course to individual interests and career goals. Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, and gain hands-on experience in investigative techniques, preparing them for careers in policing, forensic services, criminal justice, private security, and postgraduate study in criminology, law enforcement, or related disciplines.
