COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree is structured over three years to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of human biology, disease processes, and laboratory techniques essential for careers in healthcare and medical research. In Year 1, students develop foundational knowledge through modules such as Introduction to Biomedical Practice, Genes, Cells and Microbes, Biochemistry, and Introduction to Anatomy, Development and Research, supported by Student Success modules that enhance academic skills and professional confidence. Year 2 builds on this foundation with specialised modules including Cellular Pathology and Immunology, Molecular Biology for Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Bioanalytical Techniques, Clinical Haematology and Transfusion Science, and Genetics, allowing students to understand disease mechanisms, laboratory diagnostics, and modern analytical methods used in biomedical science. In Year 3, students focus on advanced professional and scientific practice through Biomedical Professional Practice and Laboratory Management, Biology of Human Disease, Clinical Immunology and Pharmacology, and an independent Research Project in Natural Sciences, applying research skills and analytical techniques to a topic of personal interest. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on laboratory experience, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing them for careers in the NHS, clinical laboratories, biomedical research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industries, or further postgraduate study in medical and healthcare-related fields.
