COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Applied Criminology program is structured across three years to build academic knowledge, practical understanding and professional skills related to crime, justice and society. In Year 1, students are introduced to key foundations through modules such as Crime, Society and the Law, Criminal Justice and Accountability, Becoming a Criminologist and Crime in Context, along with Student Success modules that develop essential academic skills and confidence. Year 2 expands this learning with Industry, Careers and Enterprise and Interdisciplinary modules that connect criminology with wider social issues, while core modules such as Violence, Vulnerability and Victims and Global Crime and Culture explore complex global challenges, cultural perspectives and the experiences of those affected by crime. In Year 3, students deepen their expertise through Policing, Punishment and Rehabilitation and Power, Injustice and Human Rights, examining how systems respond to crime and how justice can be improved. The Applied Criminology Major Project enables students to conduct independent research on a topic of interest, applying analytical and research skills to real issues. Optional modules including Demystifying True Crime, Mental Health and Trauma in Criminal Justice, Research in Practice and Knowledge in Practice offer flexibility to shape specialist interests. The course equips graduates with strong critical thinking, research and practical skills, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, policing, social support, policy, research and community-focused roles.
