COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Applied Criminology with Forensic Investigation degree is structured across three years to develop a strong understanding of crime, justice and forensic science alongside practical investigative skills. In Year 1, students gain foundational knowledge through modules including Introduction to Criminology and Forensic Investigation, Criminal Justice and Accountability, Becoming a Criminologist and Introduction to Crime Scene Investigation, supported by Student Success modules that build academic confidence and essential study skills. Year 2 focuses on developing specialist expertise through Industry, Careers and Enterprise, Interdisciplinary modules and core subjects such as Violence, Vulnerability and Victims and Forensic Investigation of Serious Crime, enabling students to explore real-world investigative processes and the experiences of those affected by crime. In Year 3, advanced study areas include Policing, Punishment and Rehabilitation, Research in Practice and Complex and Major Crime Scene Investigation, where students learn to manage high-level forensic scenarios. The Applied Criminology Major Project allows students to undertake independent research related to their interests. A range of optional modules, such as Demystifying True Crime, Mental Health and Trauma in Criminal Justice, Fire and Explosion Scene Investigation, Forensic Specialists in Death Investigations and Knowledge in Practice, provide opportunities to specialise further. This applied learning pathway equips graduates for roles in policing, forensic services, investigation, criminal justice, security, research and related fields.
