COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Social Work degree at Canterbury Christ Church University provides a comprehensive combination of theoretical learning, practical experience, and professional development to prepare students for a career as a qualified social worker. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in social work principles through modules such as Social Work in Context, Collaborative Working and Social Work Values, Development, Identity and Culture, Social Inclusion and Social Justice, and Theories and Methods in Social Work 1. These modules integrate practical skills, theory, and skills days to ensure students develop essential professional competencies. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced practice and specialist knowledge with modules including Theories and Methods in Social Work 2, Law, Policy and Ethics for Social Work, Practice 2 with skills days, Research Mindedness in Social Work, and Safeguarding and Inter-Professional Working, allowing students to deepen their understanding of complex social work issues and prepare for real-world practice. The final year emphasizes leadership, research, and advanced professional skills through modules such as a Dissertation, Leadership, Professionalism and Specialist Knowledge in Social Work, and Practice 3 with skills days. Across all three years, the program integrates immersive practice experiences, reflective learning, and critical thinking, equipping graduates with the knowledge, ethical awareness, and practical skills to support individuals, families, and communities effectively and responsibly.
