COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing degree is structured over three years to develop students’ skills, creativity, and professional readiness in writing across multiple forms and contexts. In Year 1, students build a foundation through modules such as The Short Form: Brevity and Economy, Movers and Shakers: Literature in Context, Make a Noise: Your Voice in the World, and Sustainable Writing Practices: Essential Skills, supported by Student Success modules that enhance academic and professional development. These modules focus on developing a distinctive voice, exploring literary and cultural contexts, and mastering the fundamentals of creative practice. Year 2 expands knowledge and professional awareness through Genre, Markets and Trends: Publishing Now, Rule-Breaking and Game-Playing: Analogue and Digital Experiments, Interdisciplinary modules, and Industry, Careers and Enterprise, giving students insight into publishing, emerging trends, and the practical skills needed to navigate creative industries. In Year 3, students focus on long-form writing, professional development, and independent research through modules such as The Long Form: Structure and Stamina, Working as a Writer: Next Steps, and the Major Project: Creative Writing, where students undertake substantial creative work and refine their craft. Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking, editing, communication, and project management skills, preparing them for careers in writing, publishing, media, marketing, education, and related creative fields, or for further postgraduate study.
