COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Archaeology degree is structured across three years to build a strong foundation in archaeological knowledge, practical field skills and professional development. In Year 1, students explore key historical periods and develop introductory skills through modules such as The Archaeological Apprentice, Prehistoric Worlds, Trojans to Romans and Medieval Matters, supported by Student Success modules that strengthen academic confidence. Year 2 deepens understanding of archaeological techniques and interpretation with Crafting the Past, Bodies of Evidence and The Field Archaeologist, where students learn excavation methods, artefact analysis and how evidence is used to reconstruct past societies. Interdisciplinary modules broaden academic perspectives, while the Industry, Careers and Enterprise module supports employability and introduces pathways into the heritage sector. In Year 3, students prepare for professional practice through The Professional Archaeologist and Realising Research, refining advanced fieldwork, research and analytical skills. Dig to Dialogue and A Future in Ruins? encourage students to engage with public archaeology, heritage debates and the ethical responsibilities of working with the past. The Major Project: Archaeology provides an opportunity to undertake independent research on a subject of interest. Through fieldwork, hands-on projects and academic study, the course prepares students for careers in archaeology, heritage, museums, conservation, education and further research.
