COURSE CURRICULUM

The Year 1 and Year 2 curriculum of the Registered Nurse (Mental Health) MSc is designed to equip students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies required for mental health nursing practice. In Year 1, students engage with modules such as Enhancing Health and Integrated Care, Developing Skills for Practice, and Applied Research to understand the role of nurses in promoting health, preventing illness, and improving care across diverse populations. Practical modules including Nursing Practice for Part 1 and Enhancing Skills for Nursing Practice (Mental Health) provide supervised clinical experiences, enabling students to develop essential caring skills and manage more complex patient needs. Pharmacology and Prescribing Ready equips students with the knowledge of medicines management and evidence-based pharmacological principles, while Nursing Practice Module for Part 2 consolidates skills learned in both theoretical and practical components. Mandatory training ensures students meet professional standards. Year 2 focuses on preparing students for professional registration, with Skills for Registration (Mental Health) enabling them to provide interventions for individuals with mental health, cognitive, and behavioural challenges. Transition to Registered Nurse builds leadership and interdisciplinary teamwork skills. The dissertation develops research, ethical, and analytical competencies, while Nursing Practice Module for Part 3 expands clinical expertise and leadership in planned and unpredictable situations, completing the preparation for safe and competent practice in mental health nursing.
