COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Anthropology MSc includes core modules that build advanced research and analytical skills in understanding health and illness from cultural and social perspectives. The Dissertation in Medical Anthropology is the central component, enabling students to design and conduct a substantial independent research project on a topic of their choice. Ethnographic Research prepares students for fieldwork by introducing key anthropological methodologies and techniques used to collect and interpret qualitative data. Global Health: Critical Perspectives examines how medical anthropology contributes to analysing and critiquing global health interventions, epidemics and the construction of health crises, drawing on comparative theoretical and ethnographic examples. Medical Anthropology in Clinical and Community Settings explores influential texts and the application of anthropological insights to improve medical practice and patient care. Optional modules allow students to deepen their interests in related themes. Anthropological Perspectives on War and Humanitarianism studies the social and economic consequences of conflict and post-war reconstruction. Kinship, Sex and Gender explores gender roles, sexuality, reproductive technologies and kinship structures across cultures. Migration, Citizenship and Identity focuses on ethnicity, nationalism, belonging and social exclusion through contemporary case studies. Together, these modules equip students to apply anthropological perspectives to real-world global health, social justice and policy challenges.
