COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media and Communications (Media Practice) MSc includes a set of compulsory and optional modules that blend theoretical insight with practical media production skills. Compulsory modules such as Fake News, Images and Websites equip students to analyse and verify misinformation through both academic study and hands-on digital investigation techniques. Media as Power explores how media structures influence society and control public discourse, while Researching Social & Political Sciences develops critical understanding of research methods used in contemporary social inquiry. The Digital Multimedia Dissertation allows students to apply practical or theoretical research in a final project. Optional modules offer opportunities to specialise in emerging and relevant areas, including AI for Journalists, Campaigners and Activists, which examines the rapid integration of AI tools in news and social movements, and Digital Media, Social Movements and Change, which studies how activism uses media to pursue political or social transformation. Other options include Multi-platform Storytelling, which enhances skills in video, audio, visual design and writing; Politics and Digital Cultures, which analyses how digital spaces influence political communication; Political Satire and Comedy; Political and Strategic Communication; Reporting Social Justice; and modules focused on journalism practice such as News, Features and Review. Together, these modules prepare students for careers across journalism, media activism, digital communication and political media strategy.
