COURSE CURRICULUM

The Intelligence and Security Studies MA at Brunel University London combines theoretical foundations with practical skills to prepare students for careers in intelligence and security. Core modules include the Intelligence and Security Studies Dissertation, where students complete a 15,000-word research project on a topic of their choice, ranging from intelligence history and open-source techniques to counterintelligence, oversight, and legislation. The Intelligence History: Failure and Success module examines global historical intelligence case studies, exploring the development of the profession, the causes of successes and failures, and the lessons they offer, while linking qualitative research with intelligence analysis. Contemporary Threats and Analytical Methodology focuses on the assessment and mitigation of 21st-century national security threats, developing skills in structured analytical tools, strategic intelligence assessment, and collaborative analysis. Intelligence Concepts, Issues and Institutions provides a foundation in intelligence processes, systems, and organisations, including clandestine collection, agency structures, political accountability, and ethics, with comparative analysis across national contexts. Optional modules allow further specialisation, such as Counterintelligence and Security, which examines the organisational and conceptual challenges of counterintelligence within national security frameworks, and Intelligence Analysis Foundations, Methods and Applications, which introduces the profession of intelligence analysis, exploring analytical methods, institutional structures, decision-making, and the management of biases.
