COURSE CURRICULUM

The Crime Science, Investigation and Intelligence MSc offers students a comprehensive and practical understanding of contemporary investigative practices, criminal intelligence, and crime science. The Managing Investigations module provides an in-depth, analytical approach to serious and complex investigations, aligned with the College of Policing’s professional training for senior investigating officers, covering topics such as strategy development, leadership, ethics, public protection, victim and witness management, and digital media considerations. The Criminal Intelligence Analysis module introduces key theories and concepts of intelligence analysis while allowing students to gain hands-on experience with practitioner software, scenario-based learning, and skills in negotiation, communication, and courtroom testimony. Crime Science for Investigators familiarises students with crime scene management and forensic science principles, enabling them to evaluate forensic opportunities, develop investigation strategies, and utilise campus facilities including crime scene rooms and virtual reality suites. The Critical Research Methods module equips students with both qualitative and quantitative research skills, emphasising ethical, decolonial approaches and the critical evaluation of research and policy projects. Finally, the dissertation allows students to undertake an independent, substantial research project, applying theoretical and methodological knowledge to produce empirical, policy-based, or theoretical work. The program integrates practical and academic training, preparing students for careers in criminal investigations, intelligence, policy, or doctoral research.
