COURSE CURRICULUM

The compulsory modules of the Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience MSc provide a comprehensive foundation in psychological science, brain function, and research methods. Students begin with Contemporary Issues in Psychological Science, which introduces the scientific principles, history and methodologies that underpin modern psychology. Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience: Core Topics explores key cognitive and affective processes, associated neural networks, and dysfunctions in conditions such as autism and schizophrenia, including the influence of genetics and individual differences. Cognitive Psychopharmacology and Addiction examines neurotransmitter systems, cognitive enhancement through pharmacological agents, and major theories of addiction and drug misuse. Cognitive Rehabilitation and Plasticity focuses on brain plasticity, the impact of injury or illness on cognition, and therapeutic approaches such as rehabilitation strategies and pain management. Research Methods and Statistics for Psychology equips students with skills in experimental design and statistical analysis, while Neuroscience Methods: Theory and Practice provides hands-on experience in analysing neuroscience data using tools such as fMRI, EEG, fNIRS and TDCS. The program culminates in an independent dissertation supervised by research-active academics, enabling students to investigate a specialised topic using empirical methods. Past dissertation examples include studies on PTSD and memory, prefrontal cortex volume and cognition, false memories in neurodivergent populations and emotional processing in Parkinson’s disease.
