COURSE CURRICULUM

The compulsory modules in the Civil Engineering MSc provide a comprehensive foundation across advanced technical, analytical and research skills essential for modern engineering practice. Students explore advanced construction materials and retrofitting technologies, focusing on sustainability and low-carbon solutions aligned with global priorities such as climate action and resilient infrastructure. Artificial intelligence applications in civil engineering are introduced, covering data analytics, machine learning, deep learning and programming for solving engineering challenges. Climate change and environmental modules examine scientific foundations, environmental impacts, mitigation strategies, renewable energy, air quality, waste management and flood-related issues. Flood and water infrastructure engineering builds understanding of coastal and hydraulic systems alongside design and environmental protection. Structural expertise is strengthened through nonlinear analysis, finite element modelling, structural dynamics and seismic design, with emphasis on earthquake safety and modern design codes. Project management and research methods modules develop professional competencies, including leadership in project delivery, innovation, responsible research practice and intellectual property understanding. The program culminates in an independent dissertation, enabling students to apply their learning through original research.
