COURSE CURRICULUM

The Childhood, Youth and Education MSc curriculum combines compulsory and optional modules designed to build deep theoretical and practical understanding of children’s and young people’s lives across cultures. Core modules include Culture, Education and Learning, which examines how cultural contexts shape learning, educational practices and social processes, and Ethnographic Research, which prepares students with anthropological research methods for conducting fieldwork. Understanding Childhood and Youth explores how childhood and youth are constructed in different social, cultural and economic environments, analysing the contrasting experiences of children and young people globally. The Dissertation module allows students to undertake an independent research project based on their own ethnographic fieldwork. Optional modules offer opportunities to specialise in areas such as global development, gender and sexuality, migration, identity, humanitarian assistance and applied learning in community and development contexts. Topics include the social consequences of war, contemporary debates surrounding ethnicity and nationhood, the impact of transnational migration, and critical perspectives on international development. Other optional study areas investigate kinship and gender relations, youth participation, citizenship, and the practical application of academic skills in real-world organisations. Together, these modules provide interdisciplinary insight into key social issues affecting young people worldwide and develop advanced analytical, research and professional skills for diverse global career pathways.
