COURSE CURRICULUM

The Building Services Engineering MSc at Brunel equips students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in the design, management, and operation of mechanical and electrical systems within buildings. Core modules cover energy conversion technologies, enabling students to understand modern principles for local energy generation and utilisation, and to apply complex technical and mathematical solutions to engineering challenges. Electrical services and lighting design are explored in detail, emphasising safety requirements and the principles of effective lighting. Students gain expertise in building heat transfer and air conditioning, including thermal dynamics, psychrometrics, and air conditioning system design and selection. Acoustics, fire safety, lifts, and drainage are studied to ensure comprehensive understanding of building safety and functionality. The course also covers building management and control systems, focusing on the theoretical and practical application of building management systems for plant operation. Principles of fluid services and heat transfer equipment are introduced, with practical application to real-world design problems. Building services design and management modules develop skills in evaluating internal building environments, implementing engineering solutions, and understanding asset management in a professional context. The dissertation provides an opportunity for independent research, allowing students to investigate, analyse, and report original work, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing graduates for professional roles in building services engineering and sustainable building design.
