COURSE CURRICULUM

The Automotive and Motorsport Engineering MSc at Brunel University equips students with advanced technical knowledge and practical skills for careers in high-performance and motorsport engineering. Core modules cover advanced vehicle dynamics and CAD, enabling students to model and analyse complex vehicle behaviours, understand testing procedures, and interpret performance data. Advanced materials and manufacturing are also studied, focusing on lightweight and high-performance materials, microstructure-property relationships, manufacturing processes, and additive manufacturing. The program provides an in-depth understanding of advanced vehicle propulsion technologies and systems, including internal combustion engines, electric motors, batteries, energy recovery, and emission regulations, alongside mathematical modelling and optimization for energy efficiency. Students also gain strategic and business planning skills, learning to evaluate business development opportunities, assess organisational resources, and produce effective business plans. The program culminates in an individual dissertation, allowing students to conduct original research, and a major group project to design, develop, and present a competitive vehicle. Optional modules expand expertise further, covering advanced thermofluids simulation and experimentation, racing legislation, finance and sponsorship, racing vehicle design and performance, and advanced modelling and design techniques. These modules emphasise the integration of engineering principles, numerical modelling, and practical problem-solving to prepare graduates for complex challenges in motorsport and automotive engineering.
