COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in English Literature provides a comprehensive and in-depth study of contemporary and historical literary practices, combining research, critical analysis, and independent scholarship. Core modules begin with Reading, Research and Writing, which develops postgraduate-level research skills, refining techniques to a standard suitable for advanced study and preparing students for dissertation work, with attention to English Literature research methods. Postmillennial Literature focuses on contemporary literary works, exploring themes such as trauma, identity, diversity, and genre development, while situating texts within socio-historical, cultural, geographical, and theoretical frameworks to understand their relevance and impact. The Literary Decades module offers a contextual and historical approach to a selected period in British literary history, examining major texts, themes, and significant historical events to understand the aesthetic and cultural dynamics of that decade. Author(s) Study allows students to engage deeply with the works of specific writers, developing familiarity with their texts while critically analysing the socio-historical and cultural contexts of their work, enhancing understanding of literary influence and innovation. The Dissertation module culminates the program, enabling students to conduct a substantial independent research project, producing a scholarly and original written work that demonstrates high-level critical thinking, independent learning, and an original contribution to knowledge within their chosen area of literary study, preparing them for academic or professional advancement.
