COURSE CURRICULUM

The Digital Games Theory and Design MA includes core modules that combine artistic, theoretical, and practical approaches to game design. The Art Thinking for Games module explores creativity, visual design, and art direction, encouraging students to consider games as experimental and artistic media and to evaluate the aesthetic and stylistic qualities of visual assets. Games Development focuses on the practical development process, including prototyping tools, collaborative methods, project management, and industry-standard methodologies, culminating in the design and development of a team-based game project. Game Studies introduces key concepts and theoretical approaches from multiple perspectives, including philosophy, media, cultural, and socio-cultural studies, providing a critical framework for understanding games as complex cultural products. Games Design allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, developing their own design skills, experimenting with different concepts, and engaging in peer review to refine and enhance their work. The Dissertation in Digital Games requires students to undertake a substantial independent project that combines research, creativity, and practical skills, producing innovative designs and written outputs. Across all modules, students develop critical thinking, creative problem-solving, technical competence, and project management abilities, preparing them to engage professionally and innovatively in the digital games industry. This integrated approach equips graduates with the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary for a wide range of roles in game design and development.
