COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing MA focuses on developing advanced creative writing skills through a combination of practical and theoretical study. The compulsory modules include Creativity, which explores how creativity emerges in different contexts, the conditions that enhance it, and strategies for developing creative thinking while fostering critical reflection on one’s own work and that of peers. Elements of Fiction introduces students to the key components of literary fiction, enabling analysis of contemporary works, application of these elements in their own writing, and development of advanced critical and evaluative skills. How to Write a Novel provides specialist instruction in constructing long-form fiction, including narrative structure, character development, and thematic coherence. The Creative Writing Dissertation offers an opportunity for independent research and creation, allowing students to produce an extended work under academic supervision, demonstrating mastery of craft and critical insight. Optional modules such as Creative Non-Fiction allow students to explore life writing, memoir, personal essays, nature writing, and other forms of non-fiction while engaging with relevant theoretical frameworks and critical methodologies. Overall, the program balances the development of original writing practice with analytical skills, preparing graduates for professional careers in literature, publishing, media, and related creative industries.
