COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Human Rights Law LLM at Brunel University offers a comprehensive program designed for graduates seeking specialist expertise in human rights law. The compulsory modules provide a thorough grounding in the European system of human rights protection, the foundations and theory of international human rights law, regional human rights frameworks across the Americas, Africa, and Asia, and the opportunity to conduct an in-depth research dissertation. Students gain a detailed understanding of the development, implementation, and enforcement of human rights principles, and critically evaluate their effectiveness at international and regional levels. Optional modules allow students to explore comparative criminal justice, the interaction of human rights with WTO law, privacy and data protection, energy law, migration and refugee law, multiculturalism, refugee policy, Islamic law, public international law, international criminal law, environmental law, corporate responsibility, sustainability and ESG, AI law and ethics, business and human rights, and international humanitarian law. Through these modules, students examine contemporary issues including the protection of migrants and refugees, corporate accountability, ethical and legal challenges of AI, the rights of minorities and indigenous peoples, and the application of humanitarian law in armed conflict. This program equips graduates with the analytical, research, and practical skills necessary to navigate complex legal, policy, and governance challenges, preparing them for careers in law firms, international organisations, government bodies, NGOs, and advocacy groups.
