COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology (Digital Media) BSc at Brunel University explores how digital technologies and media shape society, influence behaviour, and affect identity, power, and culture. In the first year, students build a foundation in sociology, media studies, and digital environments, covering topics such as global sociology, digital media landscapes, power, inequality, and key ideas in both sociology and media. They also develop research skills and an understanding of social environments through modules like Global London. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge of digital culture, global communication, and research methods, with optional modules covering issues such as gender, migration, crime, media genres, popular culture, and everyday life. Fieldwork and practical applications enhance learning, enabling students to engage with real-world contexts. The third year focuses on advanced research skills, professional development, and a dissertation, allowing students to specialise in areas of interest. Optional modules include urban sociology, social movements, media empires, comedy, social media, migration, crises, and social reproduction. The program combines theoretical and practical learning, providing opportunities for placements, industry engagement, and hands-on research. Graduates gain transferable skills in critical analysis, research, communication, and digital literacy, preparing them for careers in media, communications, public policy, and cultural industries.
