COURSE CURRICULUM

The Product Design Engineering BSc at Brunel University equips students with a combination of creative, technical, and analytical skills to design and develop innovative products. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in electronics, mechanics, materials, and computer-based design, alongside developing visual literacy, research skills, and understanding the ethical and societal implications of design. Year two focuses on applying these skills through design practice, advanced CAD, manufacturing processes, electronics and programming, user experience design, innovation, and sustainable design principles, allowing students to tackle real-world product challenges. In the final year, students undertake a major project, combining research, development, and testing to produce innovative, commercially viable products while demonstrating technical and creative problem-solving. Optional modules in embedded systems, design analysis, advanced innovation, sustainability, interaction design, and human factors further develop specialist skills and industry readiness. Throughout the course, students benefit from hands-on workshops, digital fabrication labs, and industry-standard software, preparing them to work in diverse sectors. The curriculum emphasizes practical experience, critical thinking, and sustainability, while fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. Graduates are equipped to pursue careers as designers, engineers, or entrepreneurs in industries ranging from consumer products and electronics to automotive, technology, and sustainable design, supported by strong professional experience and industry engagement during their studies.
