COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing (Mental Health) BSc at Brunel University provides students with a comprehensive education combining theoretical knowledge and practical experience to prepare for a professional career in mental health nursing. In the first year, students build a foundation in nursing practice, human sciences, health and wellbeing, and research methods, developing the skills necessary to provide safe, person-centred care. Year two focuses on enhancing mental health nursing skills, with students learning to assess, plan, and deliver care in community and clinical settings while developing an understanding of public health, community development, and reducing health inequalities. This year also introduces pharmacology and medicines management, equipping students to support patients with mental and physical health conditions. Research methods continue to develop critical appraisal skills in preparation for evidence-based practice and the final dissertation. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through advanced practice placements, taking increasing responsibility for patient care and managing complex mental health needs. Modules in reviewing the literature, skills for registration, and transition to a registered nurse ensure students are prepared to deliver high-quality, evidence-informed care and to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Graduates are ready to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and begin a rewarding career supporting individuals to improve their mental health and wellbeing.
