COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media and Communications BSc at Brunel University combines theoretical understanding with practical skills to prepare students for careers in media, communications, and cultural industries. In the first year, students study foundational concepts in culture, society, and media, exploring key ideas, digital media landscapes, multimedia production, power, inequality, and global perspectives, while developing academic skills for research and analysis. In the second year, the focus shifts to media genres, advanced research methodologies, and applied study, with optional modules covering topics such as digital culture, global communication, gender and feminism, popular culture, media law, and social inequalities. Students gain critical insights into how media shapes society, influences identities, and reflects power structures, while honing practical and analytical skills. In the final year, students undertake advanced research and a dissertation or major project, applying their knowledge to original work, and have optional modules exploring urban sociology, comedy in media, digital audiences, media careers, fake news, media empires, American politics, social movements, and social media impacts. Throughout the course, students develop a strong understanding of contemporary media issues, research techniques, and industry practices, preparing them for careers in journalism, digital media, public relations, cultural industries, and related sectors.
