COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics BSc at Brunel University is a comprehensive program designed to develop students’ analytical, problem-solving, and reasoning skills across pure and applied mathematics. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules covering fundamentals of mathematics, calculus, linear algebra, applied mathematics, and probability and statistics, with a focus on mathematical rigour, modelling, and practical applications. Year two expands on these skills with advanced topics in linear and abstract algebra, multivariable calculus, applied and multivariate statistics, and professional development, while offering optional modules in discrete mathematics and statistical programming to strengthen computational and optimisation abilities. The final year allows students to apply their knowledge in depth through a major independent research project, fostering critical thinking, independent learning, and professional communication. Optional modules provide opportunities to specialise further in areas such as complex variable methods, differential equations, numerical methods for finance, stochastic models, decision-making under risk, deep learning, and practical machine learning, reflecting the growing importance of mathematical applications in technology, finance, and data science. The course integrates theoretical understanding with computational and real-world applications, equipping graduates with the skills, adaptability, and technical knowledge necessary for careers in mathematics, finance, data analytics, engineering, computing, and research, both in the UK and internationally.
