COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Relations and History BSc at Brunel University provides students with a comprehensive understanding of global politics and historical processes. In the first year, students explore foundational topics such as conflict, world politics, migration, modern South Asian history, Africa and Europe since 1918, and the concept of Global London, equipping them with analytical and research skills. The second year develops these skills further through modules in quantitative political science, research methods, and theories of international relations, while optional modules allow exploration of climate politics, colonialism and decolonization in Africa, comparative electoral systems, critical perspectives on international development, and social theory. Students gain insights into issues such as insurgency, national security intelligence, gender and feminism, and Britain’s historical global role. In the final year, students complete a dissertation and advanced research modules in history and politics, while optional modules cover a wide range of topics including crises and society, European Union politics, fascist Italy, apartheid in South Africa, South Asian religion and development, terrorism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Second World War, and the British maritime world. The degree combines historical knowledge with contemporary international relations, fostering critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to analyse complex political, social, and historical phenomena in a global context.
