COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Geography and Anthropology BSc (Hons) at Brunel University offers a comprehensive program that combines the study of human societies, cultures, and their environments. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in social anthropology, human geography, and environmental change, exploring topics such as beliefs, cultural diversity, space, place, and society, along with practical fieldwork to develop research and analytical skills. The second year builds on this foundation, examining critical issues including political and economic aspects of anthropology, global development, global health, migration, urban inequalities, sustainable development, and environmental challenges. Students also engage with region-specific studies, covering South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, and consider contemporary social phenomena such as citizenship, identity, and humanitarian crises. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation to develop independent research expertise and enhance their understanding of complex global issues. The curriculum further develops leadership, sustainability, and innovation skills, while offering optional modules on climate justice, urban culture, global development, global health, modern slavery, human trafficking, political economy, and social theory. Through a combination of theoretical learning, fieldwork, and practical experience, the course equips students with analytical, research, and professional skills, preparing them for careers in international development, humanitarian work, policy-making, and research, while fostering a nuanced understanding of cultural, social, and environmental dynamics globally.
