COURSE CURRICULUM

The Financial Mathematics BSc (Hons) provides a rigorous foundation in both advanced mathematics and its application to financial problems. In the first year, students build core mathematical skills through modules in calculus, linear algebra, applied mathematics, and fundamentals of mathematics, developing problem-solving abilities and understanding of formal mathematical language, proofs, and modelling. Year two deepens this knowledge with multivariable calculus, linear and abstract algebra, applied statistics, and elements of investment mathematics, alongside professional development and project work to prepare for placements or employment. These modules focus on financial planning, risk management, probability, statistical inference, and the construction of mathematical models to solve real-world problems. In the final year, students engage with modern mathematical finance, including option pricing, arbitrage, replication, and stochastic processes, and undertake a substantial final year project to demonstrate independent learning, critical thinking, and practical application of financial mathematics. Optional modules such as differential equations, numerical methods, stochastic models, and advanced machine learning techniques offer additional opportunities to specialise and apply mathematical methods to complex financial and computational problems. Graduates emerge equipped with strong analytical, modelling, and quantitative skills suitable for careers in finance, banking, insurance, investment, and research, or for further study in advanced mathematical and financial disciplines.
