COURSE CURRICULUM

The Design BSc at Brunel University provides a comprehensive education in both creative and technical aspects of product development, preparing students to transform innovative ideas into practical solutions. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in design processes, visual communication, computer-based design, materials, manufacturing, mechanics, and creative engineering practice, developing essential technical skills and understanding the ethical, societal, and environmental context of design. The second year focuses on applying these skills through practical projects and modules in design practice, UX and digital design, prototyping, sustainable design, innovation, and design for manufacturing, allowing students to explore human-centred, eco-friendly, and commercially viable solutions. In the final year, students undertake a major design project, conducting research, developing, and refining an innovative design solution while integrating skills gained throughout the course. Optional advanced modules provide opportunities to specialise in areas such as interaction design, embedded systems, sustainability, human factors, and product engineering analysis. Across all years, students engage in project-based learning, develop digital and physical prototyping skills, and apply iterative design thinking, preparing them to tackle real-world challenges. The program emphasizes critical evaluation, creativity, and practical application, enabling graduates to produce high-quality portfolios and pursue careers as competent designers, innovators, and design thinkers across diverse industries.
