COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Science (Software Engineering) BSc at Brunel provides students with a comprehensive foundation in computer science while specialising in the principles and practices of software engineering. In the first year, students develop essential skills in programming, data handling, information systems, logic, computation, and problem-solving through individual and group projects. Year two focuses on advancing knowledge in algorithms, networks, operating systems, software development, usability engineering, and project-based work, allowing students to integrate theoretical and practical skills into complex software solutions. In the final year, students explore advanced topics in computer science and undertake a substantial individual project to demonstrate analytical, problem-solving, and independent research abilities. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital media and games, human-computer interaction, network computing, and software project management, providing flexibility to tailor their learning according to interests and career goals. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on team-based project work, reflective project management, and applying contemporary development methodologies. Graduates gain confidence in designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining software systems, understanding system and network architectures, and managing large-scale software projects, preparing them for careers in software development, engineering, and IT management.
