COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Sciences (Biochemistry) BSc (Hons) at Brunel provides a comprehensive education in the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underpin human health and disease. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in cell biology, human anatomy and physiology, fundamental and medical biochemistry, experimental design, bioinformatics, and transferable career skills. The second year focuses on advanced topics including analytical and clinical biochemistry, genetics and genomics, applied molecular and cell biology, human pathology and immunology, data analysis, and career planning, with optional modules covering developmental genetics, stem cell biology, medical microbiology, and bioinformatics. These modules provide students with an in-depth understanding of biochemical pathways, molecular diagnostics, immune mechanisms, and the use of modern research techniques. The final year allows students to undertake an independent research project aligned with staff expertise, while also studying specialized areas such as medical biochemistry, cancer biology, cellular pathologies, endocrine disorders, genomic medicine, medical immunology, and molecular pharmacology and toxicology. Throughout the degree, students develop practical laboratory skills, analytical thinking, and data interpretation abilities, preparing them for careers in medical research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and further scientific study, while gaining experience with contemporary biomedical research methods and critical applications in human health.
