COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology BSc (Hons) degree provides a comprehensive exploration of human cultures, identities, and social systems, combining theoretical insight with practical ethnographic research. In Year 1, students study core modules introducing social anthropology, belief systems, research methods, and real fieldwork experiences through staff-led ethnographic case studies, alongside the option to explore topics such as historical migration, South Asian history, or social inequality. Year 2 deepens understanding through compulsory topics on ethnicity, migration, identity, political and economic anthropology, and professional practice, where students plan research projects responding to real social challenges. A wide range of optional modules allows specialisation in themes such as gender, education, digital culture, climate politics, colonialism, global health, crime, sustainable development, and regional ethnographies. In Year 3, students develop advanced research skills, study contemporary anthropological theory, and undertake an independent dissertation based on their own fieldwork. Optional modules continue to offer diverse pathways covering medical anthropology, international development, social media, environmental issues, violence and conflict, psychology and culture, and global political debates. Throughout the course, the emphasis on ethnographic practice, analytical thinking, and field-based learning equips students to understand complex social issues and apply their knowledge to careers in research, policy, NGOs, community development, media, and international organisations.
