COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemical Engineering BEng (Hons) program provides a comprehensive education in chemical and biochemical engineering, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in engineering mathematics, programming, mechanics, energy systems, and chemical engineering principles, alongside practical engineering practice to enhance problem-solving, teamwork, and professional skills. Year two builds on this foundation with modules focused on chemical engineering thermodynamics, reaction engineering, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, separation processes, engineering chemistry, computing and statistics, and a chemical engineer’s toolbox, providing students with the essential technical knowledge and practical skills required in the field. Students gain hands-on experience in process simulation, process control, unit operations, and laboratory work, integrating theory with industrial practice. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including process design, safety, biochemical engineering, separation technologies, process control, and big data analytics, developing expertise in designing, analysing, and optimising chemical processes while considering environmental, economic, and societal impacts. The chemical engineering design project allows students to undertake major individual and team design exercises, fostering innovation, creativity, and transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, project management, and critical thinking. Overall, the program equips graduates with the knowledge, technical competence, and practical experience to excel in the chemical, biochemical, and energy industries.
