COURSE CURRICULUM

The Theatre and Creative Writing BA at Brunel combines practical and theoretical approaches to performance with the study and practice of creative writing. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in performance, acting, and theatre making, alongside writing skills in fiction, poetry, and other genres, learning to analyse texts, workshop their work, and refine their craft. Optional modules provide further opportunities in acting and theatre creation. In the second year, students advance their performance and creative writing practice through modules such as performance lab, applied theatre projects, screenwriting, life writing, contemporary poetry, and genre writing including horror, science fiction, and fantasy. Students also explore critical perspectives, such as gender in performance, and develop collaborative and practical skills. The third year allows students to undertake a major creative project under supervision, produce a dissertation in drama, theatre, and performance, and create original theatre works. Optional modules include advanced acting, musical theatre, anti-racism in performance, and advanced creative research. Creative writing specialisms such as modern fiction, poetry, and screenwriting are developed alongside professional skills in creative careers, helping students plan their future in the creative industries. Across all years, the program emphasises practical experience, critical analysis, research skills, and professional development, preparing graduates for careers in writing, theatre, performance, and related creative fields.
