COURSE CURRICULUM

The Military and International History BA at Brunel University provides a thorough exploration of global conflicts, military strategy, and international relations, equipping students with both historical knowledge and practical analytical skills. In the first year, core modules such as Conflict in the Modern World, Makers of Modern Strategy, Modern South Asian History, The Problem of the Past, and Total War in the Modern Era introduce students to key concepts, methods, and events in modern warfare and history, while Global London develops understanding of social and cultural contexts. In the second year, students advance their historical research and analytical skills through modules like Historians and their Craft and The First World War: Causes, Course, Consequences, with optional modules exploring topics such as colonialism, decolonization, insurgency, national security intelligence, and Britain’s strategic roles globally. The final year focuses on independent research, culminating in the Military and International History Dissertation, supported by the Advanced Research Skills module. Students can also choose from optional modules covering naval history, fascist Italy, apartheid in South Africa, terrorism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and other regional and thematic studies. Throughout the course, students develop critical skills in evidence gathering, analysis, and communication, preparing them for careers in history, research, intelligence, security, public service, and other sectors, while benefiting from unique access to London-based archives and historical sites.
