COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Journalism (Politics) degree at Brunel University combines rigorous political study with practical journalism training, equipping students with the skills to report, analyse, and communicate political events across multiple platforms. In the first year, students learn foundational journalism skills such as interviewing, reporting, writing, audio and video production, multimedia creation, and social media management, while exploring the intersections between journalism, communication, and politics, including issues of race, multiculturalism, and British politics. Modules like News and Feature Writing and Global London provide hands-on experience and contextual understanding of media environments. In the second year, students deepen their skills in cross-platform reporting with a political focus, court reporting, and research methodologies, while also studying media law, ethics, and global communication. Optional modules allow students to explore topics such as American politics, civil rights, and digital culture. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation, develop a journalism practice portfolio, and critically examine issues such as fake news, disinformation, and media representation of politics. Optional modules enable further specialisation in areas including European Union politics, public policy analysis, social justice, social media, and American politics, providing students with a broad and practical understanding of journalism within political contexts.
