COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Journalism (Communication) program at Brunel University provides students with a comprehensive understanding of journalism, media, and communication, combining practical skills with academic study. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in multi-platform journalism, learning to research, report, write, shoot, and edit content for print, audio, and video, while exploring the relationships between journalism, communication, and politics. Modules also introduce key media theories and concepts, news and feature writing, and opportunities to develop practical skills through student publications like the Hillingdon Herald. In the second year, students build on these skills with specialised modules such as court reporting, cross-platform journalism in arts and culture, global communication, media law, ethics and regulation, and advanced research methods, preparing them for professional practice and independent research. Optional modules explore digital culture, gender and feminism, and popular culture within creative industries. The third year focuses on advanced practice and research, including a dissertation, a journalism practice project and portfolio, and the study of fake news, images, and websites. Additional optional modules allow exploration of digital audiences, social justice, media and social movements, social media, and urban sociology, equipping students with critical, analytical, and practical skills to pursue diverse careers in journalism, media, and communication.
