COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Production BA (Hons) program provides a structured three-year journey through practical filmmaking, critical theory, and professional development. In Year 1, students build foundational skills through modules such as The Craft of Filmmaking, The Professional Self, Technology, Industry and Form, Representation and Identity, Creative Project Development, and Film and TV Analysis. These modules introduce technical training, industry context, storytelling principles, performance development, and critical perspectives on identity and representation in media. Year 2 advances practical production techniques through Advanced Filmmaking, Understanding the Film and TV Industries, and Professional Practice, with a focus on freelancing, business skills, and leadership. Students can specialise through optional modules including World Cinemas, Critical Perspectives, Film and Television Genres, Animation, Filmmaking as Activism, and Film and TV Adaptation. In Year 3, compulsory modules include Analysis of Film and Television Work Experience and two dissertation options: practice-based or video essay, offering hands-on industry involvement and research independence. Optional modules allow further specialisation in areas such as Gender and Sexuality, The Horror Film, Alternative Film and Video Practice, and Documentary: Image and Violence. Across the degree, students gain technical expertise, theoretical knowledge, professional skills, and opportunities for industry engagement to prepare for careers in filmmaking and related creative sectors.
