COURSE CURRICULUM

This Film and Television Studies BA offers a comprehensive mix of practical filmmaking experience, theoretical learning, and professional development. In Year 1, students build core creative and technical skills through modules such as The Craft of Filmmaking, where they learn production language, equipment, and collaborative storytelling using industry-standard tools. Modules including The Professional Self, Technology, Industry and Form, Representation and Identity, and Film and TV Analysis develop professional practice, explore identity and representation through feminist, queer and postcolonial theory, and provide foundations for analysing film and television in cultural, political, and industrial contexts. In Year 2, compulsory modules focus on advanced theoretical frameworks through Critical Perspectives and on real-world professional preparation through Professional Practice. A wide range of optional modules allows students to tailor their interests, with opportunities to explore world cinemas, animation production, activism filmmaking, genre studies, adaptation, and industry structures. In Year 3, the Work Experience and Analysis module connects students directly with industry professionals and placement opportunities, while the Video Essay Dissertation enables independent creative research. Optional modules offer specialised study in areas such as gender and sexuality, horror, documentary and violence, and experimental alternative filmmaking. Across all years, students develop creative confidence, technical ability, critical awareness, and professional readiness for careers in film, television, and media.
