COURSE CURRICULUM

This program offers a comprehensive and flexible pathway combining English, literature, film, and practical screen production, with a strong focus on critical thinking, creativity, and professional development. In Year 1, students build core academic and creative skills through compulsory modules including The Professional Self, The Reader’s Toolkit, The Writer’s Toolkit, World Literature, and Literary London, with optional modules such as The Craft of Filmmaking and Creative Project Development. Year 2 develops professional experience and adaptation skills through compulsory modules in Professional Life and Film and TV Adaptation. A wide choice of optional modules allows students to tailor the degree to their interests, covering topics such as world fiction, inequality, the nineteenth-century novel, modernism, Romanticism, Shakespeare, contemporary and postcolonial writing, genre fiction, and a range of film modules including world cinemas, genre, critical theory, filmmaking as activism, and animation. In Year 3, students complete a Written Dissertation in Film and Television Studies and an English Special Project, with further options exploring themes such as gender and sexuality, horror, violence, Victorian literature, Irish writing, Jane Austen, documentary, and work experience. The program supports academic excellence, professional readiness, industry engagement, and opportunities to develop specialist creative portfolios for careers across media, arts, and cultural sectors.
