COURSE CURRICULUM

This section outlines the modules available in Years 2 and 3 of the English BA (Hons) at Brunel, offering a wide range of study options alongside a core focus on professional development. Students take the compulsory Professional Life module, which encourages them to build career experience through activities such as work placements, volunteering, creative projects, language learning, media production, and blogging. Optional modules explore diverse literary periods, genres, and global perspectives. These include studies of inequality and global fiction, nineteenth-century novels, Romanticism and revolution, Shakespeare and textual afterlives, Modernist writing, postcolonial literature, contemporary fiction from Britain and Ireland, and a variety of genre fiction forms. Additional topics include feminist literary movements, Victorian culture, post-war and late twentieth-century writing, the representation of violence in literature and culture, and writing about the Muslim world in early modern texts. Students may also choose focused author studies such as Jane Austen or Chaucer and Shakespeare. In the final year, the compulsory English Special Project allows students to complete an independently researched 9,500-word dissertation on a topic of their choice, supported by expert supervision. The Creative Careers module offers professional industry insights, enabling students to plan pathways into creative fields and develop practical skills for life after graduation.
