COURSE CURRICULUM

This Creative Writing and English degree develops students into skilled, reflective, and versatile writers and critical thinkers, combining literary study with extensive creative practice. In the first year, students are introduced to the core elements of writing fiction and poetry, gaining key skills in structure, voice, character, form, and redrafting, while The Reader’s Toolkit and The Writer’s Toolkit strengthen critical reading, analytical thinking, and effective writing across academic and creative forms. Optional modules allow exploration of world literature, London’s literary history, identity and representation, music and listening, and creative journaling. In the second year, students deepen their craft by studying genre fiction, inequality in global literature, Romanticism, Modernism, Shakespeare, contemporary fiction, and postcolonial writing, while creative modules include short story writing, contemporary poetry, screenwriting, horror/science fiction/fantasy, and life writing. The final year centres on independent special projects: students produce a 10,000-word creative portfolio and a 9,500-word dissertation under supervision. Further specialist options include Victorian literature, gender and sexuality, Irish writing, post-war literature, writing place, Jane Austen, Violence and cultural studies, advanced fiction and poetry, screenwriting for film and TV, creative writing for therapy, and a Creative Careers module preparing students for professional pathways in the creative industries.
