COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing BA course at Brunel University is designed to develop students’ creativity, critical thinking, and practical skills across a wide range of writing forms. In the first year, students build foundational skills through modules such as the Writer’s Toolkit, Reader’s Toolkit, Fiction and Poetry, and optional modules like World Literature, Literary London, Creative Journaling, Representation and Identity, and Ways of Hearing. These modules focus on writing mechanics, critical reading, storytelling techniques, and creative experimentation, while fostering peer collaboration and reflective practice. In the second year, students expand their skills through modules including Professional Life, Fiction, Life Writing, Writing Genre, Postcolonial Writing, Contemporary Fiction, The Nineteenth-Century Novel, Modernism, Romanticism, Shakespeare, and Screenwriting, allowing them to explore genre writing, historical and contemporary literature, and life writing, with opportunities to engage in practice-based workshops and professional contexts. The third year offers a Creative Writing Special Project, enabling students to pursue an original, substantial creative work under supervision, alongside modules such as Creative Careers and optional modules in modern fiction, poetry, screenwriting, life writing, Victorian literature, feminist literature, early modern studies, post-war literature, and thematic studies like violence, Jane Austen, and Irish writing. Overall, the program combines hands-on writing, critical analysis, and professional development to prepare students for careers in writing, publishing, media, and the creative industries.
